Chapter Three
âYou okay?â
âFine,â Lacey answered, not sure which of the bridesmaids had asked. When sheâd joined them in the girlsâ cabin, the women were freshening their makeup. Soon theyâd meet the guys at the arch overlooking a gorgeous view of the Blue Ridge mountains. Mind still on Luke, Lacey smoothed on a fresh coat of lipstick, then stared at herself in the mirror.
Staring at her reflection, she pulled out the clips holding her hair and shook out the shoulder length waves, combed her fingers through it, then gave herself one last look before heading out with the other bridesmaids.
âNo fair, Lace. You arenât supposed to outshine the bride,â Kevin said when they joined the guys.
âNo worries. Just wait until you see Brianna,â Lacey assured, her gaze unable to keep from straying to Luke. âHer parents stopped by our cabin and plan to walk over with her.â
On cue, the bride and her parents joined them, and the wedding coordinator morphed into a five-star general, ordering everyone to take their places.
âKevinâs right you know,â Luke said later when they were standing to the side of the activities, awaiting further instructions from the coordinator who was currently discussing possible seating arrangement changes.
âHa. Youâre just over here escaping Mandy. I saw her chatting you up a few minutes ago.â A green knife of jealousy had slashed through her as sheâd watched the woman openly flirt with Luke. âNot interested, I take it?â
He shook his head. âNo, but she wasnât taking the hint.â
âMaybe you should bluntly tell her you arenât interested,â she suggested, relief hitting her. She hadnât thought he was, but heâd been smiling and kind, much as heâd done with Lacey herself, so she hadnât been sure.
âI did. She didnât seem fazed.â
âOh. Sorry.â She met his gaze. âShe is pretty, though.â
âShe is, but sheâs not my type.â
âPretty isnât your type?â
He laughed. âLetâs just say that it takes more than a pretty face to impress me.â
âOkay, now you have me curious. What is your type?â
âSmart. Funny. Loyal. Hard-working. Successful. Beautiful. Stubbornââ
âStubborn?â she interrupted, arching her brow at him. âStubborn is your type?â
He chuckled. âApparently.â
Her throat tightened as the truth hit her. âIt sounds as if youâre describing someone you know.â
His gaze held hers. âYou think?â
Oh goodness. He was. Lacey bit into her lower lip and she swallowed back her disappointment. âSheâs a lucky woman. Youâre a great guy.â
âIâm glad you think so.â
âWhy didnât you tell me earlier when we were talking about this?â She sounded accusatory, but she couldnât hold back the questions.
He shrugged. âBecause thereâs not anything to tell. Iâm not in a relationship.â
âBut there is someone youâd like to be in a relationship with?â Which one of his exes still held his heart?
âYes, but there were reasons we couldnât be together. Those reasons donât seem important anymore.â
âIs she why youâre moving back to Atlanta?â
He considered her question a moment. âI hadnât consciously admitted that to myself, but yes, I believe she played a role in my wanting to come home. The opportunity to transfer was timely.
